Once upon a time, in the midst of a global pandemic, when the world seemed upside down and even the birds outside were practicing social distancing, a group of determined souls from the Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) found themselves in a peculiar situation. Locked down in their homes, unable to gather physically, but with hearts as stout as ever to honor their heritage, they stumbled upon a novel idea: why not hold a virtual memorial service?
And so it came to pass, on that fateful April 25th in 2020, that a virtual confederate memorial service was held at the grave of Lt. Gen. S. D. Lee in Columbus, MS. Little did they know, their video would spread like wildfire across the digital realm, reaching over 11,000 people worldwide faster than you could whistle "Dixie."
Now, fast-forward a bit to the National Reunion in Jacksonville. Picture this: a banquet room filled with passionate SCV members, their spirits lifted by the camaraderie and perhaps a bit of bourbon (what happens at National Reunion stays at National Reunion). GCB and Moose, two fine gentlemen with a penchant for mischief and innovation, engaged in deep conversation with some younger members of the SCV. The topic? None other than the idea of an SCV-themed live-stream show.
With the enthusiasm of a rebel yell, the idea took flight. GCB and Moose wasted no time in seeking approval from the higher-ups. After a few hours of discussion and perhaps a ceremonial toast, SCV Chat was born and soon began streaming on Twitch.
The show was an instant hit, drawing in viewers from far and wide who were hungry for Southern history, camaraderie, and a healthy dose of rebel spirit. But alas, as the winds of cultural wokeness began to blow, Twitch dropped a bombshell: no more Confederate Battle Flags allowed.
Undeterred, the resilient folks at SCV Chat packed up their pixels and relocated to Facebook and YouTube, where they continued to thrive and grow. With two weekly shows packed with history, news, and updates from the SCV headquarters, they became a beacon of Southern pride in the digital wilderness.
And so, dear friends, the tale of SCV Chat reminds us that even in the face of adversity, the spirit of the South marches on. So raise a glass of sweet tea to those intrepid souls, for they have shown us that no matter what challenges may come our way, as long as there are good friends, good bourbon, and a good cause to fight for, we'll always find a way to keep the fire burning bright.
